Kung Fu Hand and Finger Strength Training

Finger strength, suppleness and dexterity are essential, desirable attributes for Shaolin Martial Artists' hands to possess, enhancing their Kung Fu. There is more to hand, finger and grip training than using metal-spring grippers and finger-tip press-ups. The following four exercise drills, designed to make your hands and fingers work more effectively, accurately, efficiently and flexibly, can help improve the following aspects of your Martial Arts performance.

A better, stronger fist (including variants like Leopard, Phoenix and Detour Hook Fist) can be formed more quickly and changed to other hand-forms (claw hands for example) with rapidity and precision.

Zhang Fa (Palm Way)

Palm, hand and finger strikes may be enhanced similarly and delivered with increased accuracy and confidence.

Qin Na (Seize and Control Techniques)

Great gains may be made via the acquisition of a stronger, surer grip and ability to exert increased leverage, apply more power to limb rotation and pressure upon vital points.

Claw Hands

The full range of these vital variants can be formed with greater efficacy and aplomb and with greater speed and power.

Weapons

Being almost exclusively hand-held and wielded, increased manual dexterity will inevitably enhance weapon-play after delivering its benefits to individuals' hand technique.

The following drills and exercises are designed to facilitate progress towards such ends. They can be viewed as separate individual exercises and practised accordingly or, more potently, considered all-together as a complete hand and finger workout.

Exercise 1

Inter-link the fingers of both hands, squeeze them gently together and then rub them to-and-fro vigorously 100 times(this should take, with practice, 30 seconds or less--persist until you reach or surpass this rate).. Improves knife-hand, spear-hand and sword-finger strikes.

Exercise 2

Moving only the base or first knuckles of your fingers bend and straighten these 100 times(this should take, with practice, 30 seconds or less--persist until you reach or surpass this rate). Great for improving backhand/ Crane's Wing strikes and increasing the speed with which you make a fist.

Exercise 3

Moving only the second or middle knuckles of your fingers bend and straighten these 150 times (this should take, with practice, 30 seconds or less--persist until you reach or surpass this rate). When conjoined with Exercise 2 dramatically improves fist-formation, by itself this improves leopard fist-forming.

Exercise 4

Make what is known as a 'hook-hand' in Wu Shu with the four fingers curved and thumb and middle-finger touching. Rub the thumb from the first finger down to the third and back in a circular motion 100 times and back before repeating the exercise in the opposite direction 100 times similarly. This, with practice, should take 1 minute or less. keep going until you can equal or beat this rate. This improves power and accuracy of seizing with Crane Claw, Crane's Beak strikes and hook-hand applications.

These drills although of short duration can be tiring at first. There are hand muscles that are rarely used (those between the fingers, for example) and these exercises help these 'wake up'. Your hands may well ache after practice initially--persevere and this will fade and disappear as your hands and fingers get stronger. Finally, the more you practice these drills the easier they become and the more you speed up-- eventually you may even enjoy doing them!
